CHAPTER EIGHT
âJUST ALONG HERE...â Raff was smiling, bouncing along with happy strides, his hand warm and tight around hers. She felt her lips curving up for the hundredth time. He was so different. Full of questions. About her studio, about life in Devon, about the landscape there. Maybe sharing his pain over Brianne had loosened him somehow. So much heartache, on top of the grief. No wonder he didnât feel whole, able to...
She bit her lip. If heâd only give her a chance, she could make him whole again, make him forget the rest, she just knew it. Her heart clenched. Or did she, actually? Was she galloping so hard along that road to heartache that she wasnât reading the signs? Warm go lights flashing then stopping, always stopping, because of Brianne, the one heâd been going to marry, the one heâd wanted to be his for ever, the one he couldnât get past, the one who was in the way...
She inhaled hard, steadying herself. In the way, yes, but still, it was her hand he was holding right now, not Brianneâs, and it counted for a lot that he was being honest, decent. Ironic, really. The very qualities she most admired in him were the qualities that had almost driven a wedge between them. For a desperate moment it had felt as if it was all slipping away but then heâd mentioned the view, and last night, and his eyes had been full of deep warm light, and hope had sprung up again, just like that.
Resolve too. Not to give up. Not to mess up by pushing too hard. He liked her a lot. She could feel it, and heâd said it, hadnât he? So she just needed to be patient, to enjoy this for what it was because what else was there to do when love was already living inside? If holding hands through the park was all he could offer right now, then that was fine. Romantic actually. And it was rather lovely being trapped inside the bright beam of his endless curiosity, seeing herself reflected in the glow of his eyes, like at this very moment.
âHere you are...â He was backstepping, pulling her from the shaded part of the path to a bright, open patch by the railing. He smiled. âFirst glimpse of a very nice view.â
She forced her eyes from his and looked, felt her heart swelling. The city was below them, a hazy sweep of mostly low, tightly packed buildings. Pale gold, apricot, cream, punctuated with random clusters of deep terracotta roofs and the occasional white high-rise. Beyond the buildings under the bright blue sky stretched a bright blue ribbon of sea.
âLook...â He was motioning left, his other hand settling on the small of her back. A light touch. Warm. Like his deep velvet accent. âDo you see it... La Sagrada FamÃlia?â
She felt a tingle, a gathering urge to slide her arms around him and pull him in for a kiss, but she pushed it down hard.
